YEAR 1 AT BOSTON UNIVERSITY: what I learned + advice

Moving from one coast to another for college requires some adjustment, but I knew it would be worth it and was so right after reflecting on my first year. Leaving for college, whether near or far from home, is a big change for most people. I really think I made the most of my first year at BU although I was definitely hard on myself at times. Knowing what I do now, I’m excited for my future experiences in Boston. Here are some takeaways I have from my first year/advice I would give others. I hope this is helpful to anyone reading and lmk if you agree/have any advice to add!

Explore your interests. This is really the time for you to try as many things as you want and see what sticks. Of course, don’t overcommit yourself because then you’ll just be stressed (can confirm from experience…I really did sign up for 5+ clubs and had to drop most of them), but consider ALL the opportunities in front of you. Joining clubs and groups of your interest is also a great way to make new friends.

Spend your time where you WANT to be. Time is a limited resource, so use it intentionally. If I’m indecisive about a decision/plans I think about my immediate reaction: is it a yes or no? If I don’t feel up to something or don’t want to commit 100%, then I move forward with the activity that I’ll enjoy most (and of course you can change your mind). Some nights I didn’t WANT to go out but instead of actually enjoying a night in, I would make myself feel guilty that I didn’t have enough energy to rally. Just remind yourself not to overthink the decision. Where do you want to put your energy?

Prioritize the people you enjoy spending time with. I’ve found its true that after spending time with some people you leave you feeling better than before. You don’t need to have a deep relationship with every single one of your friends but I think it’s important to make time for people you consider forever friends once you’ve found them.

Stop being so hard on yourself. This is definitely STILL a problem for me. It’s important to give yourself space and figure out what works for you instead of criticizing yourself if you don’t get a hang of things right away. Still working on this one.

Overall I had a great first year at Boston University and think these ideas sum up some general advice on being open minded during your time in college. I met so many different types of people, truly enjoyed learning, felt that I was making progress toward goals, explored a new city, and met some of my closest friends.
